Into The Fire

For the past five years, I've chosen a different friend to write a formal post honoring them 0n 9/11. That way I could let people know what incredible friends I had in my life and lost on that fatefull day. Of all the posts, none has been harder than the one honoring Larry. Two months ago I requested to honor him via the 2996 project. Since then I've been thinking of how best to let everyone know what an amazing man he was.

I must have started the post a thousand times, and each time I've broken down, sobbing mournfully because of all my friends I miss him the most. How do you encapsulate the essence of the most incredible human being I've ever had the priviledge to know. So as I wrote and re-wrote, I kept hearing this song in my head. I thought it would be the perfect way to honor him, to begin with a song.

There have been a number of posts that have already been written about him. From reading them you'll see that he was a very complex and rare individual who was loved by many. What I can add is that he was a man of great character, spirit, and courage. Even beyond the grave, his friendship, love, and strength have sustained me during my darkest hours.

Bruce Springsteen's "Into The Fire" from The Rising album

The sky was falling and streaked with blood
I heard you calling me then you disappeared into the dust
Up the stairs, into the fire
Up the stairs, into the fire
I need your kiss, but love and duty called you someplace higher
Somewhere up the stairs into the fire

May your strength give us strength
May your faith give us faith
May your hope give us hope
May your love give us love

May your strength give us strength
May your faith give us faith
May your hope give us hope
May your love give us love

You gave your love to see the fields of red and autumn brown
You gave your love to me and lay your young body down
Up the stairs, into the fire
Up the stairs, into the fire
I need you near but love and duty called you someplace higher
Somewhere upstairs into the fire

May your strength give us strength
May your faith give us faith
May your hope give us hope
May your love give us love

May your strength give us strength
May your faith give us faith
May your hope give us hope
May your love give us love

May your strength give us strength
May your faith give us faith
May your hope give us hope
May your love give us love

It was dark, too dark to see, you held me in the light you gave
You lay your hand on me
Walked into the darkness of your smoky grave
Up the stairs into the fire
Up the stairs into the fire
I need your kiss, but love and duty called you someplace higher
Somewhere upstairs into the fire

May your strength give us strength
May your faith give us faith
May your hope give us hope
May your love give us love

May your strength give us strength
May your faith give us faith
May your hope give us hope
May your love bring us love

May your strength give us strength
May your faith give us faith
May your hope give us hope
May your love give us love

May your strength give us strength
May your faith give us faith
May your hope give us hope
May your love bring us love

May your love bring us love
